One day it just clicked. I felt a shift.

February 2017. I was in the very early stages of my pregnancy and I remember walking to Belsize Park station from South End Green in Hampstead London where we used to live. I don’t remember quite what it was but I started feeling a little anxious and uncomfortable and then my mind went straight to food, as it always did.

With eating disorders, it isn’t about the food at all. Food is meant to be savoured. Food is there to nourish and energise our bodies and minds. In the case of binge eating however, food is simply used as a drug. Just like alcohol, cocaine, heroin, or even our smartphones, food causes a rush of dopamine, "the feel-good chemical", in the brain. Wow it has been a long long time since I opened up my computer for the simple pleasure of writing. Let's just say that spare time is a hot commodity for me these days and a LOT of it has been spent resting. My baby turned one recently and I can't help but reflect back on this past year, especially as 2018 comes to a close.

These past 365 days have been some of the most difficult, and the most joyful times of my life so far. I have absolutely loved watching my little monkey grow. What has surprised me the most is how my love for her grows that little bit more with each passing day. I feel a huge sense a pride and I find myself often just watching her with admiration when she plays on her own or interacts with others. It's all terrifying and breat...

Here is my story. I promise to spare you the bloody (pun intended) details. Most of all, I want to share with you some of the greatest lessons it has taught me.

So just like all expecting mums, I had a plan. Although I was fully aware NOTHING in life goes exactly to plan, ESPECIALLY the birth of a child; it was nevertheless important for me to have an idea of what I wanted. A couple months into my pregnancy, I had decided that I wanted an unmedicated water birth. I had spent the better part of the last decade learning to feel my body again through yoga/meditation/therapy, learning not to numb it, so having an epidural would mean I wouldn't be able to feel what was happening to my body, and I didn't want that... no matter how strong the pain was....

How I got pregnant? I know you're all a little too old for the birds and the bees story, so rest assured, that is not where I am going with this... I'll come back to this in a moment, but first...

With only a month left to go until my due date, I have had quite a few friends ask me: 'How are you feeling? Do you feel ready?'  

When it comes to life-changing decisions such as changing a career or starting a family, I have always been a strong believer of "If we wait until we're ready, we'll be waiting for the rest of our lives".

However, as I got thinking about this, I realised that I have never felt more ready. Ok so my hospital bag is not yet packed (umm... I probably should get on with that!), but my mind and my body are shouting: 'We've Got This...

A close friend of mine, and another mamma-to-be, recently posted on social media the truth about her pregnancy and she inspired me to think back on the last 6 months and take stock of my own experience.

In her own words "Don't listen to social media; it's not glowy skin, happy hair and the occasional bouts of gas". It may be the experience for some, but for me, it certainly has not been.

Excitement and gratitude (and nausea!!) have filled every single one of the days from when I first found out I was pregnant, until this very moment, six months later. Ok so this all sounds glowy and happy you must be thinking, apart from the nausea of course. Well the truth is, along with those wonderful feelings came none other than fear.

Earlier this week, I was asked to teach a few 16-year olds at an all girls school in North London. They were in the middle of their GCSE exams, and their head of PE strongly believed that a yoga session would benefit them. How to prepare? I asked myself. I have not been around ANY 16-year olds, well, since I was that age. So I began to think back to what I was like back then, what I would have needed from a yoga session at that age. And I came up with absolutely... NOTHING. I certainly was never interested in yoga at that age, and someone would have had to literally pull me by my hair to go to a class, but what I would have thought or how I would have acted while in the class, I had no idea.

So here was my plan: don't have a plan....

As a yoga teacher, I am often asked this question. Here's my take on it.

Ok so all the experts tell us that in order to lose weight, we need to exercise more and eat less (and healthier foods of course). That's it right? Well if it were that simple, the western world wouldn't be faced with such a growing obesity epidemic. Of course there are many factors that are contributing to the fact that our world is getting bigger and sicker, and these can include the fast food industry, education, broken homes, parenting etc. Here's what I think the biggest reason is though: our world is getting unhappier and more disconnected than ever.

I certainly hope not.

In the context of this new year, I have been thinking a lot about what it is that prevents us all from pursuing a life that is true and unforgettable. There are many answers of course, but the main one that kept showing up is FEAR.

Fears impact every single decision we make. They govern our thoughts, and limit us in our ability to really think big.

The first step to changing your relationship with fear is to IDENTIFY THE FEAR 

Ask yourself, what are you afraid of? So many of our fears are deeply rooted in our subconscious and we may not even be aware of them. If you dig deep, you might be surprised with what you will find.

As this year draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to say a few words.

First of all, thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for your breath, your laughter, your tears and everything in between. Thank you for being open and letting down your shields.

In which areas of your life are you inauthentic? And with whom are you inauthentic? Another way of posing this question is: with whom do you pretend? These were a couple questions that were asked at my first yoga teacher training a few years ago.

When we are inauthentic, we wear a mask. We hide who we are. And why? Because there is a deep rooted feeling that who we are might not be good enough. We want to be accepted and loved, and therefore we are prepared to act certain ways or say certain things just to feel that acceptance and love. In reality however, just like the actions and words, this type of acceptance and love is also not real.
